Abstract This study was done for evaluation of correction of leg deformities by circular external fixator, with a comparison between acute and gradual correction of deformity. The biomechanics of the lower limb were discussed, stressing on the mechanical axis of the lower limb in frontal and sagittal planes, joint orientation of both knee and ankle and the implications of the deformity on the gait and joints This study included 42 patients with leg deformities (50limbs) due to different causes: traumatic, metabolic, developmental idiopathic, and post infection physeal growth arrest. All of them treated by Ilizarov external fixator, 21 patients were treated by acute correction technique and 21 patients were treated by gradual correction technique. The mean time in external fixator was 7.57 months (range from 4.5 to 10.5 months). The mean follow up was 20.33 months (range from 8 to 36 months). After removal of the frame, walking cast was done for 1 month. |
