Abstract This study aimed at designing English for Specific Purposes program for learners of commercial technician institutes enrolled in Computer Section. The program was based on the functional approach. This study reviewed literature on some fundamental features of ESP and EAP. Also, it reviewed literature of the functional approach. The study sample consisted of 40 students from Damietta Commercial Technician Institute enrolled in Computer Section involved in the one group experimental design of the study. Three needs analysis questionnaires were conducted to identify the learners’ language needs. The respondents of the need analysis questionnaires were 7 specialists in methodology, 20 teachers and 40 students in the Computer Section. The findings of the needs analysis determined some important skills for the proposed ESP program. As a result of the needs analysis process, the program which was based on the functional approach was developed. The effectiveness of the proposed program which was based on the functional approach was assessed and proved to be effective. The study offered suggestions for further researches. |
