Abstract The present work was Held to appraisal the protective effect of Spirulina (crud) and Spirulina (extract) against the negative impact to Alloxan. One hundred and twenty rats were split to six equal groups. First group (control) administrated saline, second group treated with Alloxan (150 mg/kg B.W once I/P), third and fourth groups administrated with (Sp cr) and (Sp ex) with dose (20 mg/kg B.W orally daily) respectively, fifth and sixth groups administrated with Sp cr and Sp ex (20 mg/kg B.W orally daily) respectively and treated with Alloxan (150 mg/kg B.W once I/P) (A + Sp cr) and (A + Sp ex). At 3rd and 6th week whole blood and serum were collected to evaluate hematological, biochemical parameters and immunological parameters also tissue (pancreas) for histopathology and liver homogenate for determent of oxidative stress and antioxidant markers. The resulted that the Alloxan treatment induced macrocytic hypochromic anemia i.e. decrease in erythrocytes count (RBCs), hemoglobin concentration (Hb) and Packed cell volume (PCV %) and increase (MCV), also decrease in total and different leukocyte counts, moreover blood glucose level, the liver enzymes (ALT, AST and ALP), triglycerides, cholesterol, LDL-C, urea, uric acid and creatinine were increase but total protein, albumin and globulin were decrease, also increase in MDA and decrease in CAT, GSH and SOD moreover induced decrease in all immune parameter (IgM, IgG and NO) also decrease the body weight, the histopathological showed destruction of beta cells in pancreas. In contrast the Spirulina platensis (crud or extract) treatment ameliorated the negative effects of Alloxan on hematological, biochemical, oxidative stress, antioxidant markers, immune parameter, body weight and histopathological results. The conclusion both crud or extract dose of Spirulina platensis did not have side effect on body also have protective effect against diabetes caused by Alloxan. |
