Abstract Detailed transabdominal fetal anatomic scanning at 13-16 weeks versus 18-20 weeks in relation to fetal outcome • Abstract: Objective: To compare visualization rates for early targeted organ scanning at 13-16 weeks versus 18-20 weeks in relation to fetal outcome. Methods: A prospective longitudinal study was conducted at Ain Shams maternity hospital at the ultrasound special care unit for the fetus the study included 200 pregnant women as they visit the unit for their routine antenatal care and were scanned twice for targeted detailed organ scanning once at 13-16 weeks then rescanned again at 18-20 weeks. Results: A total number of 200 pregnant women were recruited and scanned twice. 91% of fetues were normal at labor and 18 cases of abnormal fetuses (9%) were detected during the study the abnormality was in the form of termination of pregnancy, intrauterine fetal death, still birth, Down syndrome and hydrops fetalis. Conclusion: None of both gestational ages (13-16 weeks and 18-20) is clearly superior to the other. As at 13-16 weeks has the advantage that most lethal malformations will be detected early in pregnancy allowing early termination and at 18-20 weeks is associated with a slightly higher detection rate of major malformations. |
