Abstract

The present study was carried out at Al-Amana nursery in Talkha district and a private farm at Zayyan region, Belqas district, Dakahlya Governorate during the two summer seasons of 2014 and 2015 to study the effects of different graft combinations on the graft compatibility as well as growth, yield and fruit quality of watermelon cv. Aswan F1. The experiment included thirteen treatments resulted from the combinations of four rootstocks and three grafting methods as well the control. The treatments were arranged in a randomized complete blocks design with three replicates. The obtained results could be summarized as follows: The First part: Graft compatibility parameters: The results cleared that grafting onto Jumbo rootstock followed by grafting onto bottle gourd by Tongue approach method achieved the highest survival % compared to other graft combinations. Also, the highest compatibility degree was between watermelon (scion) and Jumbo followed by bottle gourd then Nun 6001 rootstocks. Although Splice grafting gave the highest area of graft union, Tongue approach grafting showed the greatest width of graft union, which is related to increase of vascular tissues thickness leading to improve vegetative growth and fruit yield. As well, the highest compatibility between rootstocks and scion represented by stem diameter (at, above and below graft union) was recorded by watermelon grafting onto bottle gourd rootstock, specially using Tongue approach followed by Splice method. While Jumbo rootstock was in the second rank. The second part: Open field evaluation: The results indicated that grafting increased vegetative growth, number of male and female flowers and fruit yield. Where, grafting onto Jumbo by Tongue approach method recorded the highest values of most vegetative growth parameters in both seasons. Also, grafting onto Jumbo followed by bottle gourd using Tongue approach followed by Splice method showed the highest values of fruit yield in both seasons. The best physical fruit quality was recorded by grafting onto Jumbo using Tongue approach method in both seasons. The chemical fruit quality was related to rootstock, while grafting methods didn’t have cleared influence on them. The best results of chemical fruit quality was recorded by grafting onto Jumbo in both seasons compared to other rootstocks and control. Generally, it could be recommended that using grafted watermelons cv. Aswan F1 onto Jumbo by Tongue approach followed by Splice method as alternative to traditional cultivation, especially under soil conditions suffered from abiotic stresses such as salt stress, to achieve the highest compatibility, increase fruit yield and improve fruit quality.
