Abstract

The primary goal of nursing education is to help nurses and nursing students learn how to synthesize information, reason, and use clinical evidence appropriately. Guiding students in these complex mental processes requires nurse educators to choose learning activities that move beyond teaching facts and their application to promote advanced clinical reasoning and clinical decision making. Teaching nurses to reason and use evidence is a challenge because it requires educators to see the learners’ thinking.
Clinical reasoning (CR) is a central theme for nursing professionals’ practice and teaching. It is an essential feature of health care practice that focuses on the assimilation and analysis of health care evidence that is differentiated according to its usefulness, efficacy and application to a selective group of patients. It is the process by which nurses collect cues, process the information, come to an understanding of a patient’s problem or situation, plan and implement interventions, evaluate outcomes, and reflect on and learn from the process. Effective clinical reasoning depends upon the nurse’s ability to collect the right cues and to take the right action for the right patient at the right time and for the right reason.
The Mind Map is a teaching strategy which helps the students to acquire, organize, and remember incoming knowledge more effectively. Mapping is defined as a graphic or pictorial tool used to arrange key concepts. In nursing education, the key concepts are assessment of data that students collect either through case studies or clinical assignments. The map develops as students diagram schematically the relationships among various clinical data. This process assists the students to visualize complex relationships and to apply theory to the clinical area.
The purpose of mapping nursing practice in nursing education is to help students develop clinical reasoning skills; that is, assess the patient, gather information from the literature, select relevant points, relate all of this information to the care of the patient, and illustrate the information graphically.
