Abstract • Upper endoscopy is a procedure used to visually examine the upper digestive system with a tiny camera on the end of a long flexible tube. The gastroenterologist use endoscopy to diagnose and, sometimes, treat conditions that affect the esophagus, stomach and beginning of the small intestine (duodenum). • This study was carried out retrospectively in AssuitUniversity Endoscopy Unit in the last five years. • The main aim was to evaluate upper endoscopic findings in patients attended toAssiut University Hospital Endoscopy Center in the last five years. • Patients were distributed as 3123 (68.37%) males and 1445 (31.63%) females. Mean of age was 50.78 ± 12 years and 1370 (29.99%) patients belonged to age group 15-40 years, 2513 (55.01) and 685 (15%) patients belonged to age groups 40-60 year and 60-85 year respectively. Sixty percent of the patients had no co-morbidities while 685 (15%), 457(10%), 320 (7%), 228 (5%) and 137 (3%) patients known to have DM, CKD, HTN, IHD and malignant diseases respectively. • Regarding the indication for EGD; the most frequent presentation was epigastric pain in 990 (22.16) patients followed by follow up of variceal management in 950 (20.79%) patients,while post-corrosive injury and anorexia were the least presentation; 3 (0.07%) patients for each. • Findings in the upper endoscopy were classified in to 10 groups includes; normal findings, inflammation, ulcerations, varices, polyps, masses, strictures, angiodysplasia, mixed lesions and other findings. Then each group is classified into subgroups. • Esophageal varices was the most common finding 880(19.3%) patients followed by GERD 685(15%) patients, while gastro jejunal ulcer was the least finding 2 (0.04%) patients. • According to the intervention; each intervention was tailored according to the findings. • Band ligation of esophageal varices was the most common intervention 1578(34.59%) patients, followed by injection sclerotherapy 454(9.85%) patients, while APC was the least intervention 45(0.99%) patients. |
