Abstract

BACKGROUND: The optimal method for treating intra-articular fractures of the calcaneus remains controversial. Extensile approaches allow excellent fracture exposure, but high rates of wound complications are seen. Newer minimally invasive techniques for calcaneus fracture fixation offer a potentially lower wound complication rate, but long-term clinical results are not available. The aim of this study evaluate the results of the minimally invasive surgical procedures have been described in the management of intra-articular calcaneal fractures in adults.
METHODS: We reviewed the best evidence and literature, focussing on articles published within the last fifteen years, and tried to summarise the findings to aid surgeons in managing intra-articular calcaneal fractures with choosing best management for patients.
CONCLUSION: there is no universal treatment or surgical approach to all displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures. The promising minimally invasive techniques may be beneficial in patients with soft-tissue compromise and multiple comorbidities. However, further research is needed to determine the ideal candidates for these procedures, as well as long-term outcomes.
