Abstract Hypertension in children is a growing health problem that is often overlooked by physicians. Hypertension in childhood and adolescence contributes to premature atherosclerosis and the early development of cardiovascular disease. Normal blood pressure values for children and adolescents are based on age,sex and height, and are available in standardized tables. According to The National High Blood Pressure Education Program (NHBPEP) Working group : *Normal BP is defined as both systolic and diastolic BP <90 percentile. *Prehypertension is defined as systolic and/or diastolic BP ≥90 percentile but <95 percentile or in adolescents, BP exceeds 120/80 mmHg even if <90 percentile. *HTN is defined as either systolic and/or diastolic BP ≥95 percentile measured on three or more occasions. The degree of HTN is further delineated into two stages. Stage 1 HTN is defined as systolic and/or diastolic BP between the 95 percentile and 5 mmHg above the 99 percentile, or in adolescents, BP exceeds 140/90 mmHg even if <95 percentile. Stage 2 HTN is systolic and/or diastolic BP ≥99 percentile plus 5 mmHg. |
