Abstract Egypt has the highest HCV prevalence in the world, 10%-20% of the general population is infected and HCV is the leading cause of chronic liver disease and HCC in the country. HCV is known as the “silent epidemic” because patients may have no symptoms during the first 20-30 years after infection. However, the infection will slowly damage their liver over time. Hepatic retinopathy is a condition at which retinal dysfunction occurs in patients with liver insufficiency. It is mostly due to high serum levels of ammonia that exceed the detoxifying capability of the Muller cell which is the main macroglial cell in the retina. Until 2011, the combination of pegylated interferon (PegIFN) and ribavirin for 24 or 48 weeks was the approved treatment for chronic hepatitis C. Three new HCV DAAs have been licensed in the Europe in 2014, for use as part of combination therapies for HCV infection. |
