Abstract

Substance dependence is widely prevalent, and no community is completely
- free from its problems (I) • Substance dependence generally provokes negative reactions
among family and community (2,3).The burden of the substance dependent patient on the family member can be wide ranging’?’. Studies postulated that family members described
the substance dependent as unpleasant and extremely stressful. Consequent problems with
the police or eventual im~risonment, shame and stigma can lead to family isolation and
reluctance to seek help (7•1 ). The course of the substance dependent’s disorder is influenced
by family burden and family coping strategies (21).
The present study aims to determine the degree and types of burden experienced by
family members of substance dependents and determine the coping strategies used by
family members of substance dependents. Also, it aims to identify the relationship between
the degree of burden and coping strategies among family members of substance
dependents.
