Abstract

Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) is a protein encoded in humans by the FGF23 gene 1 secreted by osteocytes in response to elevated Calcitriol2.
It contributes to calcium and phosphorus homeostasis which is involved in arterial calcification. Objectives: study possible relation of FGF23 with peripheral arterial disease in type 2 diabetic subjects with normal kidney function. Study design: A case control study of Sixty diabetic patients with peripheral arterial disease diagnosed as PAD and sixty diabetic patients without peripheral arterial disease or other macro-vascular complication conducted at Ain-shams university diabetic clinic. Results: Serum FGF23 was higher in type 2 diabetic patients with peripheral arterial disease. Also, Duration of diabetes, TGS level, PO4 level, HBA1C, and FGF-23 were the only predictors for peripheral arterial disease by multivariate analysis.
