Abstract Cutaneous warts are common dermatological conditions caused by HPV. Although it is a benign condition, it causes disfigurement, has a tendency to koebnerize, and can be transmitted to others. The majority of common warts are caused by HPV types 1, 2, 4, 27 or 57. Warts are common in children and adolescents. The prevalence of occurrence in children and adolescents is between 3-5%. Antimicrobial peptides are small cationic peptides which protect their hosts against a vast array of microorganisms. Two major families of AMPs have been characterized in mammals; defensins and cathelicidins. Defensins have direct antimicrobial and immunomodulatory properties. HBD -2 is a cysteine rich cationic 41 amino acid AMP of low molecular weight which was first discovered in 1997 in human skin. The hBD -2 that has important role in fighting bacteria, may also exert antiviral function. Tendency for remission of verrucae could be caused by antiviral proteins like defensins. |
