Abstract

Introduction: Up to 40% of patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs) may require mechanical ventilation (MV) due to acute respiratory failure (ARF) or acute on chronic This condition is devastating for patients and imposes heavy ). respiratory failure (ACRFhealthcare systems (exceeding US$20 billion each year for the US healthcare burdens on system as a whole) and family members, who may suffer from depression and practical and financial hardships, with patients’ nonprofessional caregivers having to face tasks that quire high skills. re
Objectives: This review aims to highlight the different causes of difficult weaning from mechanical ventilation and the different methods of management of this problem.
Data sources: Medline databases (UP TO DATE, Medscape, and PubMed) and all materials available in the internet till 2017.
Study selection: This search presented articles. The articles studied the causes of difficult weaning from mechanical ventilation and purify different methods of its treatment.
Data synthesis: Comparisons were made by structured reviews and tabulated results.
Conclusion: As outlined, the reasons for failing a weaning trial are diverse. When a patient does not pass a weaning trial, structural evaluation could help to identify factors that played a role in that specific patient. It should be noted that the review has several loose ends as our understanding of weaning failure is far from complete.
