Abstract

The purpose of this work is to compare between the results of using the titanium vs. the biodegradable plates and screws in management of metacarpal and phalangeal bones concerning, The stability, early movement of hand , incidence of complications and healing.
The study was carried out from March 2016 to December 2016 in the department of Plastic surgery in Minia University Hospital. It included 20 cases of recent metacarpal and/or phalangeal fractures (group A included 10 cases, were managed by ORIF using titanium implants and group B included 10 cases, were managed by ORIF using biodegradable implants) in all rays of the hand.
Radiographic evidence of union was observed at 3 months, one delayed-union was observed in one case (10%),while complete union was achieved in nine cases (90%) in group A , while in group B non-union was observed in all cases (100%) .
Hand function was performed at the final follow up according to Active ROMs and the results were excellent, with over 85% of patients gaining good results in group A, and poor, with less than 65% in group B.
According to the final results of this study, the group A procedure (fixation of hand fracture using Titanium plates and screws) is considered a good and reliable method in contrast to the biodegradable plates and screws in group B.
