Abstract Premature Ovarian Failure (POF) is the occurrence of amenorrhea before the age of 40 in conjunction with raised level of follicular stimulating hormone (FSH) above 40mIU/ml affecting approximately 0.9% -3% of the female population. The aim of the study is to correlate premature ovarian failure to autoimmune disorders particularly thyroiditis and to assess autoimmune oophritis and capability of POF patients to get pregenant either spontaneous or by ART. This study included 25 cases of POF and 25 controls. Autoimmune thyroiditis was found in 16% of POF cases and 4% only showed subclinical hypothyroidism. Ovarian biopsy revealed autoimmune oophritis in 27% of patients with variable degrees of inflammation and fibrosis. Key words: Premature ovarian failure, thyroiditis, autoimmune oophritis, ovarian biopsy. |
