Abstract

Minimally invasive techniques have been widely used by many authors for treatment of TMJ ID. However, using splints for TMD treatment was done many years ago.[46]
SRS is the most common splint for TMD problems and in our study we used it as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool before starting orthodontic treatment.[42]
The current study was conducted to evaluate the effect of malocclusion correction in the relief of symptoms of TMD patients. The study was designed to be a prospective double blinded trial. Patient’s examination and evaluation were performed by utilizing the RDC/TMD in order to standardize the diagnostic criteria and the method of assessment. Fourteen patients were enrolled in our study, all of them were females with age range 18-25 years received treatment with SRS splint followed by orthodontic treatment and every patient was evaluated 3 times T1 at base line before any treatment, T2 after 3 month SRS conservative treatment and T3 after orthodontic traumatic malocclusion correction.
The results of our study revealed statistically significant increase in alleviation of pain and painless mouth opening using SRS followed by orthodontic traumatic malocclusion correction.
Conclusions
from the results obtained in this study, it could be conducted that:
1- SRS conservative treatment improve the painless mouth opening and the pain score for patients suffering from both, MPD with limited mouth opening in addition to traumatic malocclusion .
2- The orthodontic traumatic malocclusion correction after the conservative SRS treatment improve the painless mouth opening and the pain score in patients suffering from both, MPD with limited mouth opening in addition to traumatic malocclusion .
3- SRS conservative treatment followed by orthodontic traumatic malocclusion correction is a successful treatment steps for patients suffering from both, MPD with limited mouth opening in addition to traumatic malocclusion.
