Abstract This study comes to some significant results such as: 1- It publishes a large number of artefacts of the churches of Old Cairo for the first time. They include icons, thrones of chalices, sanctuary screens, columns, altar ciboria, apses, et cetera. They are decorated with several themes. These were neither studied nor published before. 2- Some of the artefacts of these churches are stored or undergoing restoration that lasted for many years. Among them is the church of Saint Mercurius Abu Seifein which contains the largest number of artefacts among the churches of Old Cairo. 3- Another issue is that the Coptic Church of Saint George in Old Cairo with all its elements are modern and none of the original old artefacts of this 4- Another conclusion of this study is that the majority of the themes depicted on the artefacts of the churches of Old Cairo, and those in the Coptic Museum, that were formely placed in or made for any of these churches, are inspired from the New Testament while a few number of the artefacts are depicted with themes from the Old Testament. 5- Since the majority of references dealt with the churches of Old Cairo architecturally or studies one or a few churches artistically, this thesis studies all the churches of Old Cairo artistically and analytically rather than architecturally. |
