This thesis was divided to an introduction and three chapters.
An Introduction: This is a brief general introduction about Coptic legal
documents.
Chapter I: Coptic legal documents
It provides information about the legal aspects, whether it was private or
public. Then group of scribes who wrote the legal documents and their
titles are briefly mentioned. After that, I mentioned some details about
marriage, marriage ceremonies, marriage contracts, some relevant words
of marriage and divorce in ancient Egypt. Similarly informations about
marriage and divorce in the Greek-Roman and Coptic eras also added. In
addition to some examples of the Extramarital sex relationships in the
Coptic era.
Types of Coptic contracts are listed and its evolution from oral to written
also the Greek and Coptic words give the meaning of the contract. Finaly a
table with the words and expressions of marriage and divorce in different
Coptic dialects was attached at the end of the chapter.
Chapter II: Analysis
It is divided into three parts:
1- Linguistic study: it contains comments on the coptic formulas,
grammar, and Greek words used in the texts.
2- Civilized study: this part deals with the cultural and civilized details
in every one of the nine contracts under study separately (names,
cities, money, etc…).

3- Coptic Marriage contracts formulas: explains the formulas found in
these contracts and comparing them together (Invocation formula,
Introductory formula, Marriage formula, Penalty clause, Security
formula, Wedding gift, Witnesses’ signatures).
Chapter III: Coptic marriage documennts
In this chapter, Nine marriage contracts were added each contract of
the nine contracts is preceded by some details and informations
(definition and the publications) followed by the texts which are
divided into paragraphs parallel to its translation.
