Abstract Apoptosis is a distinct mode of cell death, which differs from necrosis in morphology and mechanism. Increase of TUNEL- positive cells, upregulation of pro-apoptotic Bax and p53 proteins, downregulation of antiapoptotic Bcl2 and FLIP markers, and activation of caspases 3, 8 and 9 have been detected after trauma (suction blister) or in skin biopsy of the depigmented vitiligo epidermis (Lee et al., 2004). Taken together, these data suggest that apoptosis of keratinocytes may occur and may play an important role in the development of this disease (Lee et al., 2005 and Lee, 2012). |
