Abstract

Azithromycin,a macrolide antibiotic, is a broad spectrum antibacterial widely used in the treatment of many respiratory diseases. AZM induce cardiotoxicity through increasing ROS and the pro-inflamatory cytokins.RJ has antioxidant and antiinflamatory effect that induce cardioprotection. Therefore, this study was carried out to assess the potential protective effect of RJ against AZM-induced cardiotoxicity.
Experimental design:
This study was conducted on 24 adult male albino rats. After two weeks of acclimatization , rats were randomly classified into 4 equal groups. group I (control group ), orally received distilled water daily for 10 days.
group II (RJ group), orally received RJ at a dose of 300 mg/kg b.wt. daily for 10 days.
group III (AZM group), orally received distilled water daily for 10 days, and on the 6th day given AZM (10mg/kg b.wt. ) for 5 successive days.
group IV (RJ+AZM), orally received RJ (300 mg/kg b.wt.) daily for 10 days, and on the 6th day given AZM (10mg/kg b.wt.) for 5 successive days.
At the end of the experiment (10 days) rats were sacrificed under anaesthesia using thiopental and blood and cardiac samples were taken for biochemical and histopathological examination. The results were summarized as follow:
