Abstract The present study investigated the effect of using computer mediated communication theory on developing English oral proficiency for first secondary school students. Participants of the study were eighteen (N=18) of the 1st year secondary school students at Elmaragha old secondary school in Elmaragha educational administration, Sohag Governorate, Egypt. Participants were supposed to use sophisticated mobiles and have internet on their cell phones and at home. Instruments of the study included a pre-post test in English oral proficiency, an oral proficiency rubric, activities based on Computer Mediated Communication theory, satisfaction questionnaire for the students, and the reflection log for the students. Results of the present study indicated that the oral proficiency of the first secondary school students was developed. There were statistically significant differences between the two mean scores of the pre and post oral proficiency test of the participants in favor of their posttest mean scores.
