Abstract The present study had carried out from February 2015 to October 2017, on 32 Arabian mares from different small-scale farms in Giza province, Egypt. Their average age was 3 to 25 years. They were suffering from repeat breeding problem for more than three consecutive breeding cycles in the same breeding season after breeding naturally to a well-known and fertile stallion. The detailed reproductive history was been taken, applying a complete clinical examination and scanning the mare’s genital tract by ultrasound, uterine samples were taken by the low - volume uterine flush method (60 - 120 ml 0.9 % saline) for performing both cytological and bacteriological culture tests. The results revealed that the bacteriological culture was positive in 31 (96.87 %) of 32. mares. No growth had recorded in one (3.22 %) mare. E. coli, was found the dominant potential uterine bacteria (15 isolates, 39.5%), followed by Staph. aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Streptococcus spp. 8 isolates (21.1%), 5 isolates (13.2 %), 4 isolates (10.5%) were respectively. Then both Pseudomonus aeruginosa and Citrobacter spp. were 2 isolates (5.3 %) for each. Only one isolate (2.70%) was for Proteus spp. The positive bacterial cultures recorded 25 (80.7%) mares with culture growth of single bacterial species and 6 (19.3%) mares with culture growth of two bacterial species (Mixed infection). The number and proportion of the mares suffered from endometritis were 6 (18.75%), 7 (21.87%) and 19 (59.38%) in relation to age group ≤ 5 years, 6-10 years and > 10 years respectively. The number and proportion of mares affected with endometritis were 2 (6.25%), 3 (9.37%) and 27 (84.38%) in relation to parity group nulliparous, primiparous and pluriparous respectively. |
