Abstract Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is among the most widespread neurological conditions affecting children in the recent six decades. ASD severely hinders child’s capacity to function. The study aims to assess behavioral profile among children with autism spectrum disorder in an Egyptian sample. Methods: A descriptive exploratory cross sectional study design was utilized with a sample of 90 children diagnosed with Autism spectrum disorder attending children outpatient clinic of psychiatry department at Mansoura University Hospital. Data was collected using four tools, the first was socioeconomic status scale (SES), the second was Gilliam Autism Rating Scale ”GARS”, the third was Conner’s Parent Rating Scale (CPRS) and the fourth was Vinland Adaptive Behavior Scale (VABS). Results revealed that the majority of the studied sample had a moderate level of severity of autism symptoms; while nearly one third of the studied patients had high level of severity of autism symptoms. Results also revealed that, the whole sample had low levels of adaptive functioning across all domains. The most common comorbid psychiatric problems of studied sample were Attention deficit hyperactivity problems, learning problems, conduct problems, impulsive-hyperactive, anxiety and psychosomatic problems. There was a statistically significant correlation between severity of autism symptoms and all comorbid psychiatric problems (except the anxiety) and statistically significant negative correlation between severity of autism symptoms and adaptive functioning. Conclusion: It can be concluded from the present study that the most of the studied children have moderate and high level of severity of autism symptoms. |
