Abstract Aim of the study • to investigate the effect of emotional intelligence educational program for first line managers on the nurses’ motivation and empowerment at Minia University Hospital. The main findings of the study were: • There were statistical significant differences in total score of first line managers’ knowledge about emotional intelligence between pre and posttest; between pre and follow-up test after three months; and between pre and follow-up test after six months. • There were statistical significant differences in total score of first line managers’ self-assessment about emotional intelligence between pre and posttest; between pre and follow-up test after three months; and between pre and follow-up test after six months. • The total mean percent score of emotional intelligence and its components indicated low level before the program which significantly increased immediately after implementing the program to be high level , but gradually decreased again after three and after sixth months of program implementation. • Staff nurses’ motivation score and empowerment score increased after implementing emotional intelligence educational program for first line managers (head nurse). • There were positive correlations between knowledge of first line managers regarding emotional intelligence and their score of self-assessment about emotional intelligence in pre-test, immediately post, after three months, and after six months of the program implementation. from this study it can be concluded that: The emotional intelligence represents a critically important competency for effective leadership and many components of emotional intelligence are correlated with the leadership competencies which help leader to motivate and empowered their nursing staff to increase their performance. Emotional Intelligence educational training program which provided in this study had a positive effect on first line nurse managers through increasing their knowledge and their self-assessment about emotional intelligence after the program implementation during the three times of measurement. As well as staff nurses’ motivation score and empowerment score increased after implementing emotional intelligence educational program for first line managers. |
