Abstract This present study aimed to assess the efficacy of a ten constituent oral antioxidant formula, on various semen parameters and seminal oxidative stress (redox imbalance) detected by galvanostat based technology -the MiOXSYS system in males with idiopathic asthenozoospermia and oligoasthenozoospermia. It was a single center, comparison of a multicomponent oral antioxidant drug and a matching placebo. All the thirty individuals included in the study were subjected to a written informed consent for participation in the study, detailed history taking, complete clinical examination, conventional semen analysis, seminal oxidative stress assay, hormonal profile assessment and finally receiving oral antioxidants for one month followed by one month washout period, then aseemingly identical placebo was given. The study revealed that the average age of studied cases was 34.23 ±5.9 (SD) years; their wives ages average was 28.03 ±5.4(SD) years with an infertility duration average of 4.30 ±2.33 (SD) years. Semen analysis revealed that; mean sperm total count was significantly increased in the second assessment after treatment as compared with the baseline assessment and further significant increase was detected in the 3rdassessment. Total sperm motility was significantly increased in the second assessment after treatment as compared with the baseline assessment and further significant increase was detected in the 3rdassessment. Normal morphology was significantly improved in the 3rdassessment after treatment as compared with the baseline assessment.ROS was significantly decreased in the second assessment after treatment as compared with the baseline assessment and further significant decrease was detected in the 3rdassessment. Sperm Concentration was significantly increased in the second assessment after treatment as compared with the baseline assessment. Vitality was significantly increased in the 3rdassessment as compared with baseline assessment. Vitality was negative correlated with patients’ age and ROS was negatively correlated with Sperm Total Count. Based on findings; we concluded that antioxidants play an important role in protecting semen from ROS and can improve basic sperm parameters in case of idiopathic oligo-astheno-terato-zoospermia. |
