Abstract The main purpose of this study was to improve secondary school students’ EFL reading comprehension and self-autonomy through using an online self-directed learning strategies-based program. The study adopted the quasi experimental design. Two intact classes from 1st year Ahmed Muwafy Secondary School for Languages were assigned to the experimental group (N=25) and the control group (N=25). Four instruments were used: reading comprehension skills questionnaire, reading comprehension test, self-autonomy scale and self-directed learning scale. The two groups were pre-and post-tested using a reading comprehension test and self-autonomy scale. Results indicated that experimental group students outperformed their counterparts of the control group on the post reading comprehension test and the self-autonomy scale. A significant improvement in the level of the experimental group students was obtained when comparing students’ pre-scores to their post scores. This indicates that the online SDL strategies-based program was successful in improving students’ reading comprehension skills and self-autonomy. |
