Abstract The use of metformin to accelerate wound healing process has been extensively studied, its usage in the field of periodontology is considered recent if compared to its original therapeutic use as an anti-diabetic drug used to treat type 2 diabetic patients which started since the late 1950s. (246) The studies concerning MF usage in the field of treatment of periodontal disease were variant in their way to assess the value of its adjunct use. In our study we evaluated the effect of the adjunct use of MF as a locally applied drug in the pockets in chronic periodontitis smoker patients; this evaluation was performed through monitoring and comparing clinical, radiographic, biologic and immunologic parameters between a study group in which the MF was applied and control group in which a placebo gel was applied. Twenty smoker systemically free patients diagnosed as having moderate to severe chronic periodontitis were included this study from the outpatient clinic of department of Oral Medicine, Periodontology, Oral Diagnosis & Radiology Faculty of Dentistry Tanta university and Sinai university, with a carefully applied selection criteria. The selected patients were categorized into two groups: Goup 1 (study group), which was treated by conventional treatment (scaling and root planning)+ MF gel local application. Goup 2 (control group), which was treated by conventional treatment (scaling and root planning)+ placebo gel local application. |
