Abstract

Background: HD patients are at particularly high risk of reduced physical activity. Lower exercise capacity causes decreased QoL, higher morbidity and mortality, and decreased functional fitnessAim of this study: The aim of the present study was to determine the prevelance of musculoskeletal symptoms and explore quality of life among hemodialysis patients. Method: This cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out on 200 ESRD patients on chronic HD aged more than 18 years from different HD units in Dakahlia, Egypt. The study was conducted between June 2017 till June 2018 Results: the most common cause of kidney disease was HTN (38%) , followed by DM (13%). The duration of renal failure was less than 5 years in about (67.5%) of studied group and more than 5 years in about (32.5%) of them. the most frequent musculoskeletal problem was knees problems(51.5%) followed by ankles problems (48%),Upper back (32%),Neck (26.0%), Low back (25.5%),Wrist & hand (19%),Shoulder (8.5%) and Elbow (8.5%).Conclusion: We affirmed that patients undergoing HD suffered from a poor HRQoL, and in comparison with other nations, our sample of Egyptian HD patients demonstrated a low HRQoL score as well as HD patients all over the world. Recommendations:One would suggest that HD service providers should have a continuous QoL assessment plan and make corrective actions when necessary to improve it.
