Abstract

The aim of this study is to compare the clinical and radiograghical outcomes between implants with rough collar and implants with smooth collar in chronic periodontitis patients in relation to 1: marginal bone loss 2: soft tissue profile 3: implant stability. Seven patients missing a tooth in posterior mandible in both sides assigned to placing the PSRC in one side and PSSC in the other side. All implants were placed in a flapless approach and restored with a conventional loading protocol. Clinical measurements were performed at base line, and at six months after loading. In addition, radiographic evaluations were carried out using cone beam computed tomography. Soft tissue profile and implant stability were measured. The implant survival rate was 100% for both groups. The mean marginal bone level (MBL) was significantly higher in the PSSC group compared to the PSRC group at all time. Mean MBL change in the PSRC group was 0.40 and the mean MBL change in PSSC is 0.46. Soft tissue profiles were stable over the time there were no significant differences between groups in stability of implants by osstell. In this study, the PSRC method preserved marginal bone by a mean of 0.40 mm more than the standard PSSC protocol in chronic periodontitis patients.
