Abstract

The success of the communication process depends on certain factors such as people’s maintenance of the PP which is based on certain rules that are developed within the surrounding society. Fraser (1990) explains that each society has a particular set of social norms, consisting of certain explicit rules that prescribe a certain behavior, or a way of thinking in a context. In linguistics, it is recognized as politeness strategies and it is studied under the umbrella of pragmatics. Consequently, politeness becomes an important part of social interaction. It is a means of maintaining respect, reducing sarcasm, avoiding conflicts, starting a friendly relationship, showing solidarity, and keeping good relationships.
