Abstract SWI plays a very valuable role in pediatric neuroimaging due to its high ability in demonstrating various neurologic conditions in children that may be go undetected on conventional MR imaging as micro-hemorrhages, vascular malformations, superficial hemosiderosis and calcifications resulting from its high sensitivity to both paramagnetic components of blood and diamagnetic components of calcium, all with better contrast and delineation than conventional MRI and also SWI has a precious role in multiple sclerosis (MS) confirmation and brain ischemic injury by visualizing cerebral microvasculature as obvious as post contrast enhanced T1WI resulting from its high sensitivity to venous deoxyhemoglobin component demonstrating the characteristic central vein sign of MS and giving an idea about ischemic area perfusion and predicting area of penumbra, in addition SWI can differentiate between brain abscess and necrotic glioblastoma via demonstration of specific dual rim sign of abscess, so it should be included in routine protocols because of its benefits not only in diagnosing and confirming neurologic diseases but also in choosing the proper treatment. |
