Abstract

Egypt is rich of many renewable resources such as sun and wind. Securing electrical energy for the new small communities by them is a good alternative solution instead of extending the national network. A lot of small communities especially in remote areas is depending on agriculture and need electricity usually to irrigation. The main source of power in these areas is diesel generator, So the present study provides an overview of using wind power potential at different remote
regions. A survey about the most common brands of small wind turbines lower than 50 kW available on the world market is made. El Kharga Oasis area is chosen as a case study of remote agriculture area although it has not excellent wind statues because
it has a wind condition similar to new targeted governmental agriculture area. The small wind turbine classified to five classes according to the resulting power rated; Class I up to 1.5kW, Class II from 1.5 to 5kW, Class III from 5 to 10 kW, Class IV from 10 to 20 kW and Class V from 20 to 50kW. The assessment of turbines in each class is based on four tower heights “10, 15, 18 and 24 meters”, Turbines’ capacity factor, and the annual power generation. The
highest capacity factor in Class III is 0.279 achieved for Zefier D14-P10 at height 24 m and Class IV is 0.29 achieved for vectory19-20 at height 24 m, So both of these turbines are chosen to evaluate wind pumping system performance in a case study. The cost of water cubic meter used in irrigation is 3.9 EGP/m3 at well depth
200m for vectory19-20 and 4.4 EGP/m3
at well depth 200m for Zefier D14-P10.
