المستخلص Hazardous medical wastes have a great impact on the environment, as a result, developed countries have paid great attention to wastes management. The lack of awareness of medical wastes danger has led to a defect in the correct and accurate application of medical wastes management systems. The problem of hazardous medical wastes disposal and handling increased in the whole universe as a result of cultural and industrial development and the increased population; therefore, it is necessary to study medical wastes management, and the architectural interventions that can contribute to a better handling. This search aims to study the architectural interventions that would contribute to better handling of hazardous medical wastes, using theoretical and field studies. To achieve this goal, the research structure has been developed to consist of two parts: First Part (theoretical) includes three chapters, Second Part (applied) includes two chapters. Chapter One: It highlights the different types of medical wastes and their sources, health care facilities types producing medical wastes, production rates of medical wastes in Egypt and some countries around the world, and identifying the international and local agreements and the governing legislative of hazardous medical wastes handling. Chapter Two: The stages of hazardous medical wastes management, the roles of medical wastes management system participants, and the basic principles to reduce the costs of medical wastes management. Chapter Three: The role of the architectural interventions required for safe handling of hazardous medical wastes in all its stages (sorting, collection, transport, storage, treatment and final disposal). Chapter Four: Display the most important results of the field studies that depended on the personal observation according some field visits to a number of hospitals (8 hospitals); through which, observations were recorded in a questionnaire form prepared for this purpose, and defining the stages of safe handling with hazardous medical wastes in reality . Chapter Five: the results of the field study were determined based opinion survey for the various groups dealing with medical wastes including doctors, nursing staff Abstract 179 and workers in medical wastes management. The survey form was later analyzed and represented in form of graphs and tables linking the various opinions about each item, and determining the stage of safe handling of hazardous medical wastes according to the opinions of users. The research study ended to some recommendations, which can contribute to achieve the search goals. These recommendations included hazardous medical wastes management stages, the role of architectural interventions required to safe dealing with hazardous medical wastes in all its stages, medical staff opinion in the current procedure of hazardous medical wastes handling, and how to improve it. |
