Abstract Background: Shared governance is an accountability model that is seen as a strategy for fostering professional nursing practices and work engagement through empowerment of nurses.Aim: To investigate the relationship among shared governance, nurses’ empowerment and work engagement at Menoufia University Hospital. Methods: A descriptive correlational research design was used. Stratified random sample of 200 nurses was recruited from different departments and units of Menoufia University Hospital at Shebin El-Kom. Index Professional Nursing Governance, Perception Empowerment Instrument, and Utrecht Work Engagement Scale were used to collect data from recruited study’s sample. Results: The total score of index professional nursing governance (IPNG) in Menoufia University hospital was traditional governance. There was a moderate level of empowerment and work engagement among the majority of study sample. Conclusion: Traditional governance was the identified nursing governance pattern by majority of study sample. As shared governance was not experienced by majority of study sample, there was no relationship among shared governance, empowerment, and work engagement of study sample. Recommendations: It is time for healthcare organizations to start organizational structure reform and use shared or self-governance organizational structure to enhance nurses’ empowerment and work engagement.
