Abstract The features of the outdoor space in healthcare facilities have an importance effect in the spiritual, physical and social state of patients. The therapeutic value of the green environment and connection of nature on patients’ in healthcare facilities have been presented as an essential components of healing process through history, but the technological development and the economic factors had caused a neglect of green amenity restorative and a separation from the nature as the design shifted towards increasing the building mass. Recently, the necessary of green spaces, sunlight and fresh air has increased, and healing gardens have become an important element in healthcare facility’s design. The research aims to enhance healthcare facilities by clarify the concept of healing gardens and the design guidelines that may contribute to achieve a healing environment with positive effects on patients’ well-being and medical outcomes. The methodology, is to study consists of three parts the first part is a literature review addressing healing gardens definition and historical overview, stages and design guidelines of the healing gardens. The second part is an analytical part that reviews three successful examples of healing gardens and analysis their design elements and features that assist in creating a supportive, welcoming, safe and non-threatening atmosphere of the outdoor hospital surroundings that discharges negative experiences and assumptions that hospitalization can cause. The third part is a case study of a MANSOURA UNIVERSITY CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL. Finally, the research ends up with the conclusions and recommendations, which confirm the importance of healing gardens and design considerations for this specialized type of gardens (pediatric hospitals), that help to activate the role of the healing gardens and their applications in healthcare facilities buildings in our country. |
