Abstract Applied Chemistry Department, Faculty of Science, Helwan University The aim of this work was to prepare new multifunctional paper coating pigments based on a core–shell structure. The core was a cheap naturally occurring white sand ore in Eastern desert of Egypt mainly composed of silica. The shell was based on some important paper coating pigments to relieve problems such as expensive cost as well as to expand the scope of application of cheap economic raw materials. White Sand\TiO2, white Sand\ZnO, white Sand\CaO and white Sand\CaCO3 core-shell pigments have been synthesized successfully by simple chemical methods. The prepared pigments were investigated physico-chemically by several techniques. Then, they were applied in paper coating mixtures, and their influence on coated paper properties was systematically investigated. TEM, SEM/EDX and XRF investigations proved that TiO2, ZnO, CaO and CaCO3 shell layers of the prepared pigments increased as the addition levels of these pigments increased. |
