Abstract Hospital acquired infections have major attention of infection control in all countries but in developing countries they are still a main cause of preventable disease and death. Despite the use of a variety of methods and techniques for cleaning and sterilization of environmental surfaces, they still play an important role in transmission of pathogens especially healthcare-associated pathogens including MRCoNS, MRSA, VRE, Acinetobacter spp. and others. These organisms are the most common causes of HAIs in ICUs. Monitoring and evaluation of high touches surfaces as door handles and elevator buttons are vital procedures for infection control because of the possibility of the contaminated surfaces to increase the risk of acquiring infections by immunocompromised patients. Therefore, the aim of this study is assessment of bacterial contamination on inanimate surfaces and equipment in ICUs and ORs at Tanta University Educational Hospital in order to detect the unusual sources of HAIs and give appropriate recommendations for corrective actions. The present study was carried out in Medical Microbiology and Immunology Department, Faculty of Medicine, Tanta University on 350 samples that were collected during the period of research from September 2019 to February 2002 from several inanimate surfaces and equipment in ICUs and ORs at Tanta University Educational Hospital such as door handles, elevators buttons, faucets, writing pens, medical charts, ECG leads, stethoscopes and wrist watches. |
