Abstract The present study aims to use Seismic refraction and Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) methods for evaluating the subsurface physical, mechanical, elastic, and geotechnical conditions and develop the essential criteria required for the design and the construction of some proposed structures. The area under investigation consists of two different sites at the escarpment of Ataqa mountain in Ataqa Industrial Area, Suez. Seismic refraction and Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) methods are applied to measure the primary and the secondary wave velocities respectively. The measured seismic velocities are utilized to calculate physical parameters such as the bulk density (ρ), the porosity (ɸ), and void ratio (e), elastic moduli such as Poisson’s ratio, bulk’s modulus, shear modulus, and Young’s modulus of the subsurface materials. Some geomechanical parameters are also calculated such as the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), and the ultimate tensile strength (UTS). In addition to that, other geomechanical parameters are calculated such as the rippability, the SPT(N value) and the competence scales. Finally, the ultimate and allowable bearing capacities are calculated. All these parameters are used to evaluate the suitability of the subsurface for construction activities. |
