Abstract

Head and neck cancer patients receiving radiation therapy experience a
variety of side effects that impact their overall quality of life (Patricia, 2018).So,
providing instruction for management of these side effects is significantly effective
in improving quality for them (Nigam & Prakash , 2018).
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of nursing intervention on
quality of life among patients receiving head and neck radiation therapy.
Setting: The study was conducted at the Outpatient Clinics of Clinical
Oncology Department and Radiotherapy Unit of Menoufia University Hospital.
Subjects: A consecutive sample of 100 head and neck cancer patients
receiving external radiation assigned randomly and alternatively into two equal
groups, 50 patients for each group.
 Study group (1): Exposed to the designed nursing intervention along with
routine hospital care.
 Control group (Π): Exposed only to routine hospital care.
Instruments of the study: Three instruments were utilized for data collection
Instrument 1: Structured interview scheduale.
Instrument 2: The Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy: Head and Neck Scale
(FACT-H&NS).
Instrument 3: Compliance Assessment sheet.
The main findings of the present study were
 There was significant improvement in mean total knowledge score about head
and neck cancer and radiotherapy among study group I than control group II
after designed intervention than before. There was an improvement in total quality of life score among study group I
than control group II post intervention.
Conclusion
Mean total knowledge score and total quality of life score were improved
among head and neck cancer patients who received the designed nursing
intervention (study group) than those who exposed only to the routine hospital care
(control group).
Recommendation
The designed nursing intervention should be carried out for all patients with head and neck cancer to improve quality of life for those patients.
