Abstract This study aimed to assess awareness of caregivers and their attitude toward psychosocial needs of stroke patients. Research design; a descriptive design was utilized. Setting; the study was conducted at Neuropsychiatry Outpatient Clinic Tanta University Hospital. Subjects & methods; a convenient sample of 85 caregivers accompanying their patient with neurovascular stroke, Tools of data collection; (4) interviewing questionnaires, and (1) observational checklist. Results; There was non statistical significant relation between socio-demographic characteristics of patients and caregivers awareness and attitude; statistical significant relation between education ; occupation of caregivers and their awareness about the patient’s psychological and social needs; non statistical significant relation between socio-demographic characteristics of patients and caregivers’ awareness about the patient’s psychological and social needs ; statistical significant relation between occupation of caregivers and their attitude toward patient’s psychological and social needs; highly statistical significant relation between caregivers’ awareness about the patient’s psychological and social needs and their attitude toward patient’s psychological and social needs. Conclusion; this study concluded that less than half of caregivers aware about needs related to self-confidence and self-esteem; less than half of caregivers aware about needs related to psychological safety; two third of caregivers aware about needs related to the affiliation; and less than a quarter of caregivers aware about needs related to communication; there was a highly statistical significant relation between caregivers’ awareness about stroke and their attitude toward patients’ psychological and social needs. Recommendations; Designing and conducting a national level mass campaign of health education for stroke caregivers; encouraging a better coordination between all healthcare partners, and stroke caregivers. |
