Abstract Effective decision requires a mastery of skills and a lot of self-confidence with the ability to listen and learn from others that will increase decision making Abilities, solve problems, Avoid conflicts, Save time and reach organization for its goals. Both good decision making and appropriate assertiveness ideally tie them together into an effective ability to work with others and accomplish work place tasks. This study aims to investigate the relationship between decision making ability and self -esteem among internship nursing students at selected hospital at Shebin Elkom through answering the following question. Do internship students have decision- making abilities? What is the level of self-esteem among internship nursing students? Is there a relationship between internship nursing student’s self- esteem and decision making ability? The study was conducted at selected hospital at Shebin Elkom namely Menoufia University Hospital, Shebin Elkom teaching hospital, El Helal Health Insurance Hospital and national liver institute hospital.. A descriptive correlational research design was used to conducting this study. All internship student working in the previous setting enrollment in year 2020-2021. (420) student were included Two instruments were used to collect the data of this study the first instrument was decision making abilities scale questionnaire that consists of two parts: part one personal characteristics of the nursing internship. Part two: consists of 43 items in six dimensions: A. The first dimensions is about establishing appositive decision making environment, it is composed of 8 items, B. The secondsubpart is about generating potential alternatives, it is composed of 7 items, C. the third subpart is about evaluating the alternatives, it is composed of 7 items.D. The fourth subpart is about choose the best alternatives,it is composed of 8 items, E. The fifth subpart is about checking the decision, It is composed of 8 items, F. The six subparts is about communicating and implementing the decision, It is composed of 5 items. The second instrument was Self-esteem scale questionnaire it include 20 items divided into three dimension: positive personal self (7 items), second subscale: negative personal self (6 items) and third subscale social self (7 items). Validity of study instruments: It was used previously and tested for validity and no modification was needed. Reliability of study instrument; Reliability of the two instruments tested by Cronbach’s alpha test, reliability, reliability of decision making questionnaire scale it was estimated as (r=0.89). While the reliability of self- esteem questionnaire: it was estimated as (r= 0.86). Results of the current study could be summarized as follow; That majority of the internship nursing students in Faculty of nursing Menoufia university were at age ≤ 23(96.0%). more than half of the internship nursing students were female and single (64.3 %) while regarding to work unit more than one third (39.3%) were in intensive care unit. The total mean score of decision making ability was (167.9762) with standard deviation (18.089). the first ranking with the highest mean score was(31.8048) with standard deviation (4.28295) related to Establishing a positive decision making environment while the last ranking with the lowest mean score was (19.0929) and standard deviation (2.93826) related to Communicating and implementing the decision. Also about two thirds of internship nursing students (63.8%) were had decision making ability (75%-100%) while only (36.2%) did not have decision making ability (>75%). The total mean score internship nursing students toward self-esteem scale was (36.27 ± 6.89) most of the studied students had a moderate self-esteem (71.0) and only (8.8%) of the students had a high level of self-esteem. Finally, there was positive significant correlation between student‟s level of Clinical Decision-Making Ability and self-esteem (P=0. 01). According to study findings, it’s recommended through three levels: I- Organizational level: Nursing supervisors should continuously monitor the nursing interns during their work and provide them with continuous support. Open communication should be promoted by holding periodic formal and informal meetings with students to reach a high level of decision making and critical thinking. Hospital administrators should assess the needs of nursing interns and work to meet them. Nursing administrators should be allowed to intern students participate in decision making and problem solving. Nurse Managers must use interactive teaching strategies that improve skills of critical thinking and decision making for intern students. II- educational level: Conducting continuing education programs and training courses for intern’s students about decision making and problem solving that can be used to increase their productivity. Decision making skills must be included in all nursing courses of students to enhance intern’s knowledge and practice about how to make effective decision. III- research level: Further study should be encouraged to be done on the larger probability sample is highly recommended to achieve generalizable results. Evaluate the effect of self-esteem and decision making ability on the nursing management staff’ performance. Investigate the effect of decision making ability on the quality patient outcomes Identify strategies that increase self- esteem and its relation with decision making. |
