Abstract Crustaceans are of the most numerous and diverse groups of arthropods. Most of the approximately 40,000 living species are marine, although some are found in freshwater and terrestrial environments (Sánchez-Paz et al., 2006). This diversity is a result of their patterns and reproductive strategies (Sastry, 1983). Crustaceans play a significant role in marine food chain. Several species of crustaceans are included in the diet of coastal inhabitants. They also from a group of animals which are frequently sensitive to heavy metals (Ahsanullah et al., 1981; Migliore & Giudici, 1990; Manisseri & Menon, 1995). Heavy metals accumulation has been described in various species of crustaceans (Ridout et al., 1989), and the concentrations of heavy metals considered safe for human consumption in such seafood are regulated by legislation (BOE, 1991). |
