Abstract Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurobehavioral developmental disorder (Zwi et al. 2000). ADHD has been conceptualized as a chronic multifactorial disorder characterized by symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. (Biederman, Faraone, 2012) ADHD is strongly associated with poor academic performance; a pattern of conflictual and often unsatisfactory relations with peers, family members, and teachers; and low self-esteem. (Jensen et al 2005). The most commonly used diagnostic criteria is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder (DSMV). DSM-V criteria have different symptoms for inattention and hyperactivity. All symptoms must be at least 6 of the 9 criteria in the category. Symptoms present for at least 6 months (American Psychiatric Association.2013) Many treatment modes have been developed in the form of behavior modification, life-style changes, counseling, medication, family therapy, school based interventions, social skills training, parent management training and sensory integration therapy (Emilsson et al. 2011 and Jensen. 2007). Cognitive behavioral therapy not verified as a first choice in therapy .it can help patients break the self-defeating cycle of failure Sensory integration session aimed at enhancing the child’s unique ability to utilize sensation. This often includes careful use of vestibular, proprioceptive, and tactile sensory input to help the child develop a foundation of ordered sensory processing on which functional skills can be built. (American Occupational Therapy Association, 2007). This single blinded study included 60 ADHD children from the Pediatric psychiatric out-patient clinic at Sohag University Hospital. 60 patients divided into two groups. group (A) 30 ADHD children treated with cognitive behavioral therapy and group (B) 30 ADHD children treated with combined therapy with age ranging from 4 to 6 years old. They were screened based on ADHD diagnosed with DSM-V Criteria, Intelligence quotient (IQ) was evaluated by use of Stanford-Binet intelligence scales V. All selected subjects were assessed with Conner’s teacher rating scale before and after intervention. The results of the present study confirm that the sensory integration therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy are effective in treatment of children with ADHD, when given with proper dosage. group B who received combined therapy was the most effective in improving child’s symptoms specially attention deficit Study Limitation Age group: we conduct only the pediatric age group Number of patient: we conduct only 60 patients in our study. Study duration: only one year. Conclusion In conclusion, this study concludes that cognitive behavioral therapy is effective in reducing the symptoms of ADHD. But combination of both the therapy gives better improvement compare to individual therapy in ADHD Recommendation Based on this study, we recommended informing pediatricians to: - know the importance of sensory integration therapy in management of ADHD Summary and conclusion 117 -Starting with occupational therapy including sensory integration therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy in small ADHD children aged below 6 years’ old - Decrease medications in small age groups - follow up these patients regularly by investigations such as: IQ Conner’s teacher rating scale. |
