Abstract Safe patient handling is very important part of the organizational culture for protecting both nurses and patients. Patients should feel safe and secure when lifted, moved, or repositioned. Safe patient handling and movement for patient with orthopedic disorders such as fracture, traction and external fixation is basic element and guide to improve nurse knowledge, practice and decrease the risk related moving. It reduce the number and severity of injuries, decrease lost time and restricted duty days, decrease absences from work and staff overwhelmed. Aim of the study: Evaluate the effect of implementing nursing guidelines on orthopedic nurses for safe patient handling and movement. Design : Quasi-experimental research design was utilized in this study. Setting: This study was conducted at orthopedic departments in Mansoura University Hospital. Subject: Fifty nurses working at orthopedic department using pre and posttest. Tools : Three tools were used; Tool I nurses knowledge questionnaire, Tool II observation checklist regarding safe patient handling and movement, Tool III standard linear scaling for risk assessment. Results: The present study revealed that knowledge pre intervention are improved in comparing with intervention of guidelines. Conclusion : It can be concluded that highly statistically significance of level of total knowledge, practice level and risk assessment post intervention. Recommendations: Availability of written guidelines regarding safe patient handling and movement in each department in hospital. |
