Abstract

The two most commonly used surgical techniques to correct myopia are PRK and LASIK. Both these techniques use the excimer laser to remove corneal tissue and reshape the cornea thus reducing its refractive power.
Ectasia is a serious complication of Laser vision correction surgeries. It is characterized by poor visual performance and corneal thinning, which may progress to require corneal transplantation.
Because investigators suggest that changes in the posterior corneal shape are key to early recognition of corneal ectasia, it is important for clinicians to have an accurate method of studying posterior corneal elevation in post-LASIK patients.
Our study was to evaluate the changes in posterior corneal elevation post LASIK and PRK using Sirius Scheimpflug Pentacam, the study included the follow up of 30 LASIK eyes (group I) and 30 PRK eyes (group II) for 6 months, comparing posterior corneal elevation maps pre & post Laser vision correction (LVC) in both groups. Only myopic eyes are evaluated we found that there were no statistically significant differences between pre & 6 months post LVC in both groups (PRK & LASIK).
We found no clinically significant changes in the elevation of the posterior corneal surface for the postoperative 6 months after considering the safe inclusion and exclusion criteria of LVC.
Thus we have concluded that there were no statistically significant changes in the posterior cornea after LASIK and PRK procedures.
Recommendations
Large scale prospective studies of more prolonged durations are needed to further substantiate and refine the results of this study. Further studies on the changes in the posterior cornea after correction of higher errors of refraction with LASIK or PRK should be done.
