Abstract The present study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of using explicit systematic phonics instruction for developing some English basic reading skills among primary school pupils. The researcher adopted the quasi- experimental pre-posttest one group design. Participants of the study included 31 third grade primary school pupils at Anwar El Haramein primary school. El-Badary school District, Assiut governorate. The researcher prepared the suggested program , which included teaching materials such as a pupil`s book, a teacher’s guide and an instrument (reading performance test) to measure some English basic reading skills (alphabetical principle, auditory discrimination, word analysis, synthesis and word recognition). The English basic reading skills were also taught through the proposed program. Study results indicated a statistically significant difference at “0.01” level between the mean scores of the pre and post administration of the performance test in favor of the post administration. Furthermore, results revealed that using the explicit systematic phonics instruction had a large effect on the performance of the study group in the overall basic reading skills. Discussion of these findings, recommendations, and suggestions for further studies were presented. Key words: basic reading skills, explicit systematic phonics instruction, primary school pupils |
