Abstract Objective: Evaluation of retinal vascular density and macular sensitivity in patients having rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and are on hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) treatment for more than 5 years using optical coherence tomography angiography(OCT-A), and 10-2 perimetry in comparison to RA patients not using HCQ. Study Design: a cross sectional case-control study. Patients & Methods: 52 eyes of 52 patients were included. The patients were divided into 2 equal groups (group A included 26 eyes of RA patients on HCQ and group B included 26 eyes of RA patients not receiving HCQ). Macular vascular density and macular sensitivity were evaluated in both groups using OCT-A and 10-2 perimetry. Results: There were generally more field defects in group A (HCQ group) than in group B (non HCQ group) this was statistically significant in LN and UT quadrants of the visual field with (p-value:0.012) and (p-value: 0.010) respectively. The retinal vascular density in the superficial plexus showed statistically significant thinning at the CT quadrant of the superficial plexus (p-value 0.041). There was a significant positive correlation between vascular density and BCVA in the CT quadrant of the deep plexus (p-value: 0.047). In group A (HCQ group) the scotomata in the UT, LN, and central quadrants of the visual field were associated with statistically significant decrease in vascular density of the corresponding LN, UT, and CT quadrants of the deep vascular plexus respectively (p value<0.05). In group B (non HCQ group) the scotomata in the LN quadrant of the visual field were associated with statistically significant decrease in the vascular density of the corresponding UT quadrant of the deep vascular plexus |
