Abstract

Clinical research shows that pomegranates, when part of a healthy
diet, might help prevent heart disease, heart attacks and strokes. This is
because pomegranates have the potential to thin the blood, increase blood
flow to the heart, reduce blood pressure, reduce plaque in the arteries, and
reduce bad cholesterol while increasing good cholesterol. Pomegranate
extracts have been shown to scavenge free radicals and decrease
macrophage oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation in animals and increase
plasma antioxidant capacity in elderly humans.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of supplementation
with dry pomegranate (Punica granatum) powder on biomarkers of lipid
oxidation and antioxidants status in mild cardio vascular disease patients.
Sixty adult men suffering from mild CVD (stage 1) were selected
randomly from outpatient clinic of cardiopulmonary department in El-
Fayoum governorate, their ages more than 45 years. They were diagnosed by
the physician as mild CVD (stage 1). Patients with bronchial asthma,
diabetes mellitus and mental health problems such as depression and anxiety
are excluded from the study.
The patients were divided randomly into two equal groups (A&B):
group A (Control group); consisted of thirty patients. They received (starch
powder) for 8 weeks. group B (Study group); consisted of thirty patients.
They were supplemented with 50gm of dry pomegranate powder, one time
per day for 8 weeks Nutritional Assessment (Mean daily nutrient intake using 24 Hours
recall and Dietary history), Anthropometric measurements (Body mass
index, Waist Hip Ratio and Arm Circumference), Blood pressure and Heart
Rate were assessed, blood analysis for TC, TG, LDL and HDL and
Antioxidants analysis (MDA, SOD, GSH, CAT and VIT C) for both groups
A and B before and after supplementation.
Results showed that; in group A, there was no significant difference in
the mean value of WHR, AC, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood
pressure, cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL, HDL, MDA, SOD, GSH, CAT and
VIT C post supplementation in comparison with pre supplementation values
and in group B there was significant difference in the mean value of systolic
blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, cholesterol, MDA, SOD, CAT and
VIT C post supplementation in comparison with pre supplementation values,
While there was no significant difference in the mean value of Arm
Circumference, WHR, triglyceride, LDL, HDL and GSH post
supplementation in comparison with pre supplementation values.
