Abstract Purpose: to investigate the effect of preoperative graduated abdominal strengthening exercises and Russian stimulation on the abdominal muscles{u2019} strength after ventral hernioplasty. Methods: Sixty patients with ventral hernia, preoperatively, their age ranged from 20 to 45 years were selected from Cairo University Hospitals and randomly distributed into four equal groups. group (A) (study group, composed of 15 patients); they received graduated abdominal strengthening exercises for 30 min., 3 times per week for 6 weeks preoperatively. group (B) (study group, composed of 15 patients); they received Russian stimulation on abdominal muscles for 30 min., 3 times per week for 6 weeks preoperatively. group (c) (study group, composed of 15 patients); they received combination of graduated abdominal strengthening exercises and Russian stimulation on abdominal muscles for 30 min., 3 times per week for 6 weeks preoperatively. group (D) (control group, composed of 15 patients); they were instructed to presume in normal activities of daily living preoperatively, without abdominal exercises or Russian stimulation. Isokinetic dynamometer was used to evaluate abdominal muscle strength and Ultrasonography was used to evaluate abdominal muscle thickness at 4 occasions, first (initial assessment before treatment), second (pre-operative assessment, after finishing 6 weeks of treatment preoperatively), third (2 months post-operative assessment), and fourth (4 months post-operative assessment). Results: there was a significant increase in abdominal muscle strength post-operatively in study groups in favor of group (C) compared to control group. Conclusion: combination of pre-operative graduated abdominal exercises and Russian current stimulation was effective for strengthening abdominal muscles after ventral hernioplasty |
